Shannon White is the GIS Certificate Coordinator at William and Mary.  Shannon has focused on outreach and research in GIS and geospatial education for over 18 years.   She works to promote geospatial technologies (GIS, GPS, Remote Sensing, Drones), geographic analysis and spatial thinking.  Shannon works with audiences ranging from K-16 learners, educators, researchers and geospatial technology users/agencies within local, state, regional, national and international contexts.

Her past work in Cooperative Extension was with  University of Missouri Extension, included roles as Geospatial Extension Specialist and 4-H State Science Specialist, in the Missouri 4-H Center for Youth Development. She also served as Coordinator of the Missouri Geographic Alliance and lead the effort toward a statewide K-12 GIS license for youth in Missouri.

Shannon earned her Ph.D. in Instructional Technology with a focus on GIS and her M.Ed. in Social Studies Education from North Carolina State University. She earned her undergraduate degrees from Radford University in Virginia. Her teaching experience in middle and high school classrooms, universities, and museums, such as Colonial Williamsburg, bring a unique perspective to her teaching and research.  Her research interests are in the areas of geography education, GIS, geospatial technologies, instructional technology integration in K-20 education, and educational professional development.
